Denmark confirms plan to purchase two Boeing P-8A maritime patrol aircraft

New assets will boost Royal Danish Air Force’s long-range capability. Denmark will acquire an initial two Boeing P-8A maritime patrol aircraft, with the assets to “primarily be used in the Arctic and North Atlantic areas”, the nation’s defence ministry has announced. Confirming the decision on 7 July, the ministry says the acquisition will advance “based on a military professional recommendation” made by chief of defence General Michael Wiggers Hyldgaard. “We must be able to defend all parts of the kingdom,” he says.

Under Sub-Agreement 2 on the Arctic and the North Atlantic within the 2024 - 2033 Defence Agreement, it was decided that Denmark will establish a maritime patrol aircraft capability in cooperation with a NATO Ally in order to strengthen its presence in the Arctic and the North Atlantic.
